The Sound of Music at Stuttgart’s Kelley Theater ()

The Sound of Music at Stuttgart’s Kelley Theater is an entertaining and moving performance perfect for the holiday season. Directed by Janelle Manske, the cast pulls off a well-known classical adaptation performed with emotion, wit and amazing talent.

The Sound of Music is set in Austria in 1939 at the outset of Nazi occupation. Manske chose to treat the sensitive nature of performing this musical in Germany with a demure respect.

All is not serious, though. Max Detweiler, played by talented LTC Don Williamson, keeps the audience on their toes and lightens the mood when the realities of war set in. Likewise, when Maria, played by Sarah Viola, runs to the abbey interrupting her fellow nuns at the beginning of the performance, the audience can’t help but laugh. Viola is a standout Maria, both in acting and her musical ability.

Across the cast, the singing talent is a highlight. The nuns are accomplished harmonizers. Baroness Elsa Schraeder, played by Erica Page, has an amazing voice; her performance as an entitled, rich snob means we really love to hate her.

With the exception of the Von Trapp house, the sets are simple and help convey the human side of this poignant story. Inside the home, the family can be themselves, laugh and throw parties. Emotions run high as we watch Captain Von Trapp, played by Dave Wilson, and Maria realize their love for each other. Outside of the glamourous red velvet décor of the house, however, we are exposed to the harsher realities of life during Nazi takeover.

The juxtaposition of a love story taking place during a war is palpable. We go between fear and fun as scenes come and go. Never is the fun more necessary and welcome than when the Von Trapp children, with their high energy, are on stage. The younger characters in this show are double cast, so there are a lot of children on the playbill! I commend the crew for their ability to keep younger cast members on task. All those successful rehearsals certainly pay off with incredible performances by the kids, who are an audience favorite.

The Kelley Theater is a comfortable space for this classic, and well-timed holiday performance. Seats are assigned upon arrival, so getting their early is beneficial. In addition, there are great snacks and drinks available that make pre-show and intermission a treat.
