Although I was given an informational brief, provided a general timeline and understood the expectations, nothing quite prepared me for being a patient, especially on deployment.

Being in a Medical Command Unit while deployed overseas, I did not foresee myself needing to be medically evacuated to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center (LRMC). The unknown variables made for a concerned departure to Germany. All of this was new for me, as well as my Command.

My stay was much longer than the estimated 1-2 weeks. I could have gone into a downward spiral, blaming everyone and everything for what was not going in my favor. I may have been justified. However, that would not have gotten me seen any quicker or made me heal any faster.

Now was the time to take my own advice and practice what I preach to others; however, I would need reminders. The Armed Forces Wellness Center (AFWC) reminded me of the tools I already possess and provided additional resources to enhance my well-being.

First things first. What could I control? What could I do to occupy myself that would positively impact my lifestyle behaviors? Managing stress, healthy sleep, biofeedback training, resting for resilience, proper nutrition and exercises were all topics of discussion at AFWC.

In addition to the group classes, one-on-one sessions were available. I had to reframe my own thoughts. Replacing the emotional guilt of taking a ‘temporary knee’ during deployment to seeking additional care was vital for empowering my mind and body.

I am so thankful for the selfless services of the individuals working at LRMC, especially in physical medicine, pain management, pain clinic, medical transient detachment and DWMMC Clinic. The quality of care was top-class. Everyone I encountered was professional, caring and helpful. A special shout out goes to my LNO and nurse case manager. Their attentiveness and ability to follow through was a tremendous support.

I was also fortunate to make connections through the outreach of USO Warrior Center, Wounded Warrior Project, Unit Ministry Team, Military and Family Life Counselors and American Red Cross. These organizations are a vital part of healing.

As I have successfully returned to duty, I encourage everyone to reflect on their own self-care regime. Listen to your body’s signals and take heed of the warning signs. It is okay to seek care momentarily in order to stay in the fight long term.
