Directed by Cindy Krewson, The Gingerbread Man combines our fairytale favorite humans, animals, and (of course) cookies, in a fun, and interactive retelling of the classic story.

As this family-friendly the show opens, we follow along as Sully (Cameron Rahe), an outsider city kid is introduced to country living via his Uncle Dudley (OF3 Steve Graham) and Aunt Mabel (Gretchen Drybola), including all the hysterical stories and characters that make up the tales of rural life. As we get to know each personality, more and more of their individuality shows.

While the cast of this show is small, much of their talent is spread across multiple roles. The numerous costume and makeup changes make for an exciting performance, especially for the youngest audience members. In fact, this show is especially perfect for families with children who enjoy moments of interaction and physical comedy.

When Skunk (OF3 Steve Graham), who leans into his dramatic style and fashion, realizes that he stinks, the audience can’t help but laugh. His dramatic perfume obsession, excess of perfume bottles and accessories accentuate his character.

Fragrance plays a role throughout the show, with the aroma of baking gingerbread wafting through the audience. In addition, the simple set coloration gives the space an ambiance of being at Grandma’s house, while the costuming maintains that down-home country feel.

“Run, run as fast as you can. You can’t catch me, I’m the Gingerbread Man.”

There is a dramatic moment when the sly Fox (Gretchen Drybola) lures our hero, the naïve and trusting Gingerbread Man (Joey Pistulka), into a trap. Lessons are learned, and all is well that ends well.

What stands out most in this production is how each actor has chosen to bring out individual elements of their character. The Donkey (Shirlene Oduber) has an incredible vocabulary (pay close attention!), while Country Mouse (Renee Veliz) has a great southern accent and the City Mouse (Zofia Drybola) is perfectly demanding.

The show is full of fun hidden puns and laugh-out-loud moments that bring the audience into the performance. It is a perfect family outing!

In the end, the Gingerbread Man finds his way to happiness, and Sully learns to love family values, even when things are unfamiliar. Don’t miss this fun show, and its incredible cast – many of whom are debuting with Razz Ma Tazz this season.
