Vote for Penny!
As far as good dogs go, Penny the 9-year-old yellow lab is one of the best. She represents Germany as a top four nominee in the 2023 USO Canine Volunteer of the Year competition and needs your votes. Penny is known for her sweet and calm disposition. She loves squeaky toys, bacon and green beans, and ‘stealing’ kitchen towels to take a snooze with.
Penny has an impressive resume, logging over 500 hours as a volunteer in 2023. Through her work, she provides comfort to patients at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and boosts staff moral twice per week. She regularly visits the Landstuhl USO Warrior Center where she offers encouragement to patients undergoing various treatments at the Combat Casualty Clinic. At the USO Ramstein, she greets service members at the PAX Terminal who are headed down range and sends them of with a happy tail wag. She even fills in as a mascot for local military youth soccer teams.
Penny found her family at just 8-weeks-old in Oahu, Hawaii. Her love for greeting people made it apparent she had a gift for therapy work. When she moved to Ramstein Air Force Base, Germany her mom Tiffany enrolled her into K9s for Veterans Abroad, an organization that trains dogs specifically for veterans that live overseas. It was here that Penny earned her certification and began her work as a therapy dog with her partner Irma, a fellow yellow lab. She’s been fulfilling her purpose ever since.
