A must-visit landmark, the Pantheon is one of the best-preserved monuments of Ancient Rome, offering free entry and an unforgettable experience in the heart of the Eternal City.

Pantheon (Kevin Geraci)

There is so much to see and do in Rome that it can be overwhelming. I have put this itinerary together to help you better plan. There were three adults and no children on this trip, so substitute and re-arrange as needed.

These are the first two days of the trip. We allotted time to walk to the attractions. Please note for the dinner options, there were plenty of non-pasta options as well, but I could only eat the pasta course and dessert. Click here to see a condensed itinerary of all seven days in Rome.

 Day One: Arrival

  • Arrival

    • We arrived by train from Milan at about 5 p.m. If taking a long-distance train, I recommend upgrading to first class for optimum comfort.

  • Check-in at hotel

    • We chose Hotel della Torre Argentina for its location and price point; but I am sure there are others that are just as good. This was a location that allowed us to walk to our various destinations, but we did choose to Uber to and from the train station.

  • Dinner at Osteria Pasquino.

    • The concierge at the hotel provided us a printed list of local restaurants, bars and cafes that they recommended. Next to Osteria Pasquino it read, “best carbonara,” so of course I had to try it. The list was not wrong. It was amazing.

    • I recommend: Alla Caprese, Spaghetti Mancini alla Carbonara and the Panna Cotta

  • After dinner activity: Otherwise Independent Bookstore

    • This is an English-language bookstore with a variety of options literally next to Osteria Pasquino. It is also connected to the bookstore across the road. If you spend 20 euros at either bookstore store, you can get a free beer at their on-site bar.

Day Two: Patheon and Exploring

  • Wake-Up: 9 a.m. (Sleep-in; this will probably be your only day to do so)

  • Breakfast at Caffe Camerino

    • We ate here every day for breakfast. It is right around the corner from the hotel and the coffee and food options are plentiful and delicious.

    • I recommend: Cappuccino Grande, Cornetto al Pistachio, Gran Caffe Camerino

  • Pantheon ( I recommend 30 minutes to an hour)

    • Get tickets before you go. As soon as you know you are going to Rome, book your tickets for attractions. We got really lucky here because there was a cash-only line for walk-ins, and we traveled during the off-season. Had we gone for spring break, summer or Christmastime, I doubt we would have gotten lucky.

  • Walking around Rome

    • The third member of our Roman adventure arrived on this day, so we only put the Patheon on the official itinerary to account for picking them up from the airport in the morning.

  • Dinner at Osteria Pasquino (Yes, again, trust me)

    • I probably could have eaten here every night because it was so delicious.

    • I recommend: Tonnarelli alla Gricia con Tartufo Nero and Tiramisu

  • After dinner activity: Gelato and walking around seeing the area at night.

    • There are plenty of gelato options in the area and I tried several as we walked around on different days. I doubt there is a wrong choice.
