Glencoe is a must-see Scottish destination for photo enthusiasts and fans of breathtaking scenery and outdoor activities. If you have ever seen photos of a white house nestled around rolling mountains of greenery and trickling waterfalls, that is Glencoe. Pull off at the scenic stops or where it’s safe to do so and capture some of Scotland’s most iconic views. Visit the filming locations for James Bond and Skyfall, hike the many mountain trails, hop in a canoe or kayak and navigate the chilly Scottish waters. This area of Scotland is considered “The Outdoor Capital of the United Kingdom.”
Located just over thirty miles northwest of Glencoe is the Glennfinnan Viaduct. The Glenfinnan Viaduct is famously known as the inspiration for the Hogwarts Express in Harry Potter. During the summer, you can book a seat on the Jacobite Steam Train from Fort William to Mallaig or watch it cross over the viaduct from the hillside. If you want to see the train going over the viaduct, you must be parked and in place on the hill by 10:45 a.m., the scheduled arrival time on the viaduct. It arrived around 10:52 a.m. when we were visiting. From the parking lot, follow the crowds of people on the trail and climb up to secure your spot; give yourself at least 10 minutes to get from the parking lot up to a spot on the hill. I recommend getting there as early as possible since many people are all vying for the best spots on the hill.
As the train approaches, you can see the plume of steam in the distance. The whistle sounds as it crosses, leaving oohs and ahhs from the crowd of people around. This experience is not just for adults but for everyone in the family. Our two- and three-year-olds particularly enjoyed it. If you want to spend more time hiking and not just coming to see the train crossing, you can walk the Knoydart Trail that takes you right by the viaduct.
Whether you are an outdoor enthusiast or a budding photographer, Glencoe and the Glennfinnan Viaduct are destinations that offer something for everyone. Their unique beauty and the experiences they offer are sure to leave you with unforgettable memories!
