Orange is the new green

As summer starts to fade away and we slowly move into fall, the vibrant colors of the season begin to emerge. If you’ve somehow missed the change in scenery, another clear indication is the bombardment of all things pumpkin! You almost can’t go anywhere without seeing something pumpkin related - patches, soups, flavored coffee, donuts … the list goes on!

One of our family’s favorite things to do this time of year is head to the pumpkin patch to pick our own pumpkins. Instead of simply going to the closest farm for a quick trip, why not make a whole family day out of it at a pumpkin festival. Germany, being home to the largest pumpkin festival in the world in Ludwigsburg, is the perfect place to be. For some, the size of that festival can be a bit overwhelming. If you want to get your pumpkin fix but like to keep to more intimate festivals, head to Hitscherhof Farm in Massweiler.

“Orange” you glad it’s fall

Well, you will be! This lovely farm will truly get you in the spirit of autumn. There’s more to your experience than just picking your own pumpkins or other gourds. The kids will go crazy over the large corn maze! The size will definitely keep them challenged and entertained. Plus, there will be pony rides and a fantastic straw castle.

You’ll want to bring your market bag or cart as well. In the fests’ market area, purchase seasonal produce, fresh baked goods, savory smoked meats and, of course, regional wines. Artisans will also be selling handcrafted work, such as baskets, jewelry, yarn (my favorite), toys and so much more!

I would be remiss if I didn't mention the amazing food. Your palate can enjoy an abundance of both savory and sweet dishes and beverages. Being in the land of bratwurst, it would be a shame not to sample a pumpkin seed bratwurst. Their pumpkin soup will be a great way to warm up in the crisp fall air. Rinse it all down with a sparkling pumpkin prosecco. Don’t worry if pumpkin is not your thing. You won’t leave hungry. Their farm-fresh corn and corn pancakes are absolutely amazing.

“Carve” out more time

If you decide you want to extend your trip, take advantage of the lovely bed and breakfast on the premises. The hosts are sure to give you a memorable experience. Golfers, don’t forget to bring your clubs so you can enjoy a round on their 18-hole course. This was my little trick to get my husband to actually want to go.

Summer may be over, but embrace the autumn season as it is brought to you in Massweiler.
