EUROPE

When we arrived in Germany, our sponsor family picked us up for our first German breakfast. They told us we were going to a truck stop in Ramstein. I immediately pictured a Waffle House type restaurant with a dingy, smoke-filled atmosphere that’s best consumed at 2 a.m. (if you know what I mean). However, we were new and I really had a craving for French toast, so I went with it.

I was immediately surprised when we walked in. We sat ourselves – as is typical in these parts – in the modern-style restaurant. Once I opened the menu, I quickly realized we weren’t in Kansas (well, Missouri) anymore and I wasn’t getting that French toast. Nonetheless, the Autohof Ramstein has become one of my favorite local places for Frühstück (breakfast). Their varied menu includes fried or scrambled eggs, fresh bread, wonderful cold cuts and delicious cheeses. If you need the comfort of something familiar, their bacon and sausage is deliciously greasy and fabulous. My favorite meal is the Brummi Frühstück mit Kaffee satt. For 7.50 euros, you get a little bit of everything and it’s enough to possibly share.

If you’re looking for somewhere to go for lunch or dinner, they’re also open at that time. Most recently, they’ve added Flammkuchen (Germany’s version of a crispy thin crust pizza) to their menu.

The wait staff is amazing. They’re especially helpful when you’re trying to practice your German.

Tip: If you need to use the restroom, it’s 50 euro cents. Be sure to bring the receipt to the waiter. They will deduct it from your bill.

Even if you’re not in the Ramstein area, many gas stations along the autobahn have attached restaurants. You may want to give them a second glance the next time your belly starts to growl.
