“A Chorus Line” at KMC Onstage

“A Chorus Line” at KMC Onstage (SrA Kyle Kostner)

2024 TOPPERS award recipient for Outstanding Direction of a Play and Outstanding Play for her work on “She Kills Monsters,” Nina Run Bergsdottir, makes her musical directorial debut in the KMC Onstage production of “A Chorus Line.” Bergsdottir, her production team, musicians, cast and crew provide a “thrilling combination” of live music, choreography, lights and acting that fill the stage of a dance studio audition.

The show opens with Zach, the casting director, played by Bernd Roeder, leading a motley crew of hopeful auditioning dancers as they attempt to stand out in a crowd hoping to be “One” of the chosen for an upcoming Broadway musical.

As each character hopes to “get it”, the audience is taken on a well-executed journey of rollercoaster emotions and backstories that bring each of the lined-standing hopefuls to this place and time. No two stories are alike, despite the desired outcome, which means it is important for audience members to understand that adult content and themes are heavily woven through the lines and lyrics. The whole cast does a wonderful job delivering and clearly demonstrating the connection and admiration they have for the theme of the show and each other as they perform.

Voices soar and talent shines throughout each musical number by talented cast members, both returning and debuting at KMC Onstage. The sassy, forwardness of Shiela (Katina Campbell) yields tons of laughter throughout the audition, while the comedic delivery and choreography by Maddie Turner, who plays Bobby, is impeccably performed in the song “And.” The anxiousness captured by Sakari Mayer as she plays Maggie is a fantastic contrast to the confidence of Val, played to Hartley Szekely, whose beauty regiment is hysterically explained in act two.

Despite Chorus Line turning 50 this year, it is full of relatable characters, experiences and emotions for anyone that has ever had to interview, audition or present themselves as they navigate the challenges of adulting and trying to land a job.

By the end of the show, audience members will be applauding the sparkle and shine of each “One” of the singular sensations that volunteered their time and passion for the performance.
