Even in Germany the spooky season is embraced, and some of its biggest fans are small ones.

The town of Mayen, a cute small city about 25 miles west of Koblenz in the Rhineland Palatinate, has long established itself as a worthy Halloween destination with its annual fest of all things scary.

The Festival der Magier & Hexen—Festival of Magicians and Witches—will see lots of creepy characters appear in Mayen’s city center. Cute little children’s faces will take on gruesome appearances, thanks to the makeup so artfully applied by their doting parents. Wizards, witches and magicians, dressed accordingly, will also add to the fantasy-like atmosphere. Not only kids, but grown-ups too, are encouraged to wear a costume on the day.

The festival, slated for Oct. 30 in 2021, returns with many of its familiar and beloved elements.

From 11 a.m. magicians and wizards can test their skills and mettle at five stations set up on the route to the Genovaburg, the city’s castle. Those who complete all tasks successfully can receive a certificate of recognition—be sure to gather stamps at each of the stations.

A magic show by the mysterious Zauberer Solo is offered at noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. at the castle itself.

The Brückenstraße will become a gallery for the display of carved pumpkins; these can be admired between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Also offered on the day are a magic photo box, readings of stories and various walking acts. A magic workshop is offered at the “Weinstube” winery located directly across from the entry to the Eifelmuseum, which will also be open on the day.

Admission to the town is free, as are most of the activities. Tours of the castle, museum visits and participation in workshops are subject to additional fees. Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
