Suzie Q cuddled on the couch

Suzie Q cuddled on the couch (Kristen Thoennes)

I have lived in Germany for four years now and have been to many countries, but one of my favorite trips was to Oberammergau, Germany. My man-person went on TDY and invited me along! I was excited to visit in the fall because that is one of the best seasons in Germany.

We stayed at Hotel Garni Fux and had a spacious suite. The view from our balcony was amazing! Oberammergau is a small town and everything is walkable. Our stay included breakfast for my people, which they really enjoyed.

Hotel Fux was dog-friendly, which suited me perfectly. I spent a lot of time snoozing the day away in comfort.

I loved walking around the town. Everywhere you look in Oberammergau, there are beautiful looking nad smelling flowers!

While my man-person was at work, my lady-person explored the town on her own. She really loved the pink interior of this church and walking through the cemetery to admire the many detailed and handcrafted gravesites.

Oberammergau has a long history of woodworking. My people told me that the Oberammergau Museum had great displays showcasing this craft. They purchased the combined ticket and visited the Passion Play Theater afterward.

The Passion Play has been performed every ten years in Oberammergau since 1634 (with some exceptions throughout its long history). The most recent play was performed in 2022 (postponed due to COVID) and will be back on schedule again in 2030.

While I chose to eat my dinner in the hotel room, my people enjoyed dinner in town. One favorite was Dumpling and Sushi. My lady-person raved about the avocado bowl.

We found the next restaurant, Hoerbis, while walking around town. My lady-person told me about the Hipster Burger; it had a delicious sounding habanero-blueberry sauce. She said it was very messy, but very tasty! (She could have brought me one if it was so good, just saying). She recommends ordering the crispy sweet potato fries and said one order was enough for two people to share.

On our way home, we stopped to see the Neuschwanstein Castle. It is one of those places you kind of have to see at least once while living in Germany and this seemed like the best time to cross it off our list. Be warned, the uphill hike to the bridge for this viewpoint is a bit challenging (at least for my lady-person…for me it was no problem)! The bridge was very busy so my people took turns so I wouldn’t have to be squished with the masses. I am not a big fan of crowds.

Have you visited Oberammergau? If not, I recommend it!
