Barefoot in the Park KMC Onstage

Barefoot in the Park KMC Onstage (CAPT Lisa Rivera, USN)

The honeymoon is over! Get a glimpse of this young newlywed couple’s hilarious foray into the reality of setting up house together.

Join the small cast of “Barefoot in the Park” at KMC Onstage for some big laughs in this sweet romantic comedy about starting out together. Corie and Paul have just moved into their tiny, leaking walk-up apartment when they realize that the work of marriage has begun.

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to experience a show “filmed before a live studio audience,” this is it. But the production team at KMC Onstage pulls off the comedy, snark and emotion without the need for cut scenes and retakes. Directed by MSgt(Ret) John Fisher, the six members of this cast take your favorite 90’s sitcom to the next level.

The wordplay and writing are exceptional, and the characters deliver their witty retorts in such a way that you feel immersed in a TV sitcom. Paul and Corie’s 2:30 a.m. fight hysterically illustrates the reality many of us hate to admit, that there is no cause for argument. Later, Corie’s mom Ethel trails her distraught daughter into the apartment wearing nothing but a man’s black bathrobe. The comedic timing leaves us wondering if it’s the odd neighbor Victor Velasco whose antics are spot-on for a character channeling Kramer from Seinfeld. They refer to him as, “Our decorator who comes in the window once a week.”

The set will take you back to every TV comedy you watched ‘back in the day’ – the couch, chair and coffee table trio, the tiny apartment kitchen, and that pesky floral painting that keeps falling when the door slams. When snow comes in through the skylight – read: the hole in the roof – we know the backstage crew were having a good time.

Even the costumes pull together the glory of the 1990’s because, of course, there is a fluorescent track suit and a grungy beanie. But our main characters are past the trends; they are simply trying to make it through their first couples’ fight, with an audience laughing at both the antics and truths we all learn along the way. I mean, sometimes the Ouzo is so strong we can’t make a fist.

Their apartment is falling apart, their neighbor may be genuinely crazy and now mom has come to stay. With the makings of a TV sitcom, “Barefoot in the Park” at KMC Onstage is a must-see performance.
