The sport of tennis is a very strenuous activity, both physically and mentally. Games can go on for hours and at the highest levels, often do. However, the Ramstein Royals tennis team was prepared to take on the next challenge with three outstanding games. After a disappointing loss to the Kaiserslautern Raiders at homecoming (5-13), the tennis team was thrilled to have three more wins to add to this year’s roster.
The Ramstein Royals tennis team recently took on Wiesbaden, SHAPE, and Lakenheath.
Wiesbaden, having been defeated by the Royals two weeks previously, lost for a second time on Sept. 20. Ramstein was again successful in defeating the team, with many standout games, including Camille Lund (12) with an end score of 8-1 and Scarlett Hosey (9) with a score of 8-0.
SHAPE was defeated by the Royals for the first time this season, 2-16. At an amazing home game on Sept. 21, the Royals took a win from SHAPE, an American school in Belgium. At a nearly full sweep, many players reached new heights with strong games showing the discipline and strength of the team.
According to Assistant Coach Matt Allison, “We have a great tennis family, and that’s something that sets us apart. We are confident the team knows how to do the drills and are prepared for the matches.”
Lakenheath was also defeated by Ramstein with a total score of 16-2. Traveling to Lakenheath is a trip that most players wait seasons for, and the Royals team was able to make it out this year with a spectacular win. The school, located in England, takes up to a ten hour bus ride and is always a memorable trip. On Sept. 28, the boys’ team was able to take home a clean sweep with no losses, while the girls team also took home wins During the event, there were some stellar matches, including one by Tristan Chandler (12) with a 6-0, 6-0 game score and Scarlett Hosey and Brooke Vinson (10) with an 8-2 doubles game.
For the Royals, tennis practice can vary greatly by day but is always a challenge. According to varsity tennis player Scarlett Hosey, “They work us hard, we do laps, we exercise, we stretch, and after all that, we create a rhythm.”
