As the saying goes, “Try to leave this world a little better than you found it.”
KMC Pride emulated this on World Wildlife Day (March 3rd) at the Ramstein Base Lake. We had around 20 volunteers show up for our park clean-up project. We cleared out the compacted charcoal in the grills, unclogged the ashtray, and picked up the trash around the park and in the lake. We also donated an ash bucket for the grills and a cigarette butt bucket for the ashtray, which were both missing from the park. Everyone in the group was excited about the project and we will be doing similar on-base projects in the future.

I try to contribute to conservation projects when I can. During my time in Hampton Roads, VA., I was involved with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving and reviving the Chesapeake Bay. Here at Ramstein, it’s fulfilling to have a platform to advocate for such causes and to inspire volunteers. Collaboration is crucial to ensure that ecosystems flourish and plant and animal species endure for generations to come, allowing us to appreciate nature’s benefits and beauty.

Our next environmental awareness event will be our Earth Day Festival (April 20th) at the Base Lake on Ramstein Air Base. Earth Day is an annual event on April 22nd to demonstrate support for environmental protection. KMC Pride will be celebrating with a community picnic at the Ramstein Base Lake. We will have a cornhole tournament and the Girl Scouts will have a create-your-own birdhouse craft. You can either take your birdhouse home or donate it to our feathered friends at the Base Lake.
April is also recognized as National Stress Awareness Month to bring attention to the negative impact of stress. KMC Pride will have a mindfulness workshop as well as an outdoor yoga session. Join us for a fun day of crafts and games.

The Ramstein Base Lake is located off of Harmon Avenue near the Southside Chapel. It’s a smaller park with a water feature, but it has a gazebo, picnic tables, grills, horseshoes and a power supply. Pets are permitted in the Base Lake recreation area but must be kept on a leash and under control at all times.
Come out and enjoy this newly cleaned space but remember “try to leave this world a little better than you found it.”
