Set in the heart of the mysterious Black Forest, Triberg is an enchanting destination any time of year. But in the winter, when snow blankets the rooftops and the sun slips below the horizon in the early afternoon, the dark woods surrounding Germany’s highest waterfalls light up with 1 million twinkling lights. If you’re looking for a Christmas market that stands out from the rest, consider making your way to Triberg Christmas Magic, or Triberger Weihnachtszauber, this year.
Enter the festival through a mesmerizing 100-meter-long tunnel of lights, and get lost for a little while in the Black Forest, where illuminated lanterns hang from the trees. Don’t worry; a trail of glowing snowflakes will be there to guide you back to civilization.
Throughout the day, music and shows offer a variety of entertainment for every taste and age group on two stages — one in the wintry outdoors and one in the warmth of the local town hall. Take in the vibrant sights and sounds of the festival atop the 20-meter-tall Ferris wheel. When the cold air takes its toll, you can thaw out with an invigorating cup of coffee at the town hall fireplace.
If you’re traveling with little ones, head to Children’s World for storytelling, puppet shows, a live nativity scene and carousel rides. Afterward, take them to warm up and roast bread on a stick, or Stockbrot, over a crackling fire.
Be sure to attend one of the five captivating fire shows offered daily above the icy waterfalls. The spectacle starts at 5:30 p.m, 6 p.m., 6:30 p.m., 7:15 p.m. and 8 p.m.
If you’re up for braving the cold a little longer, stick around for nightfall, when the village gnomes make their appearance. Dazzling fireworks displays cap off the evening nightly from Dec. 27-30 at 9 p.m.

This year’s Triberg Christmas Magic event is scheduled for Dec. 25-30. It is important to note, that unlike at most European Christmas markets, you are required to purchase tickets to attend the Triberg Christmas Magic event.
