During my many years of living in Germany, I’ve discovered that Germans love their festivals. You can find in Germany a great amount of festivals—from local village events to international affairs—on any given weekend.

However, fests can be a time when people can easily get into trouble. Any time you gather a large group of people and introduce alcohol to the mix, you’re bound to get a few rowdy situations. Here are a few tips to help you avoid trouble and enhance your festival experience.

  • Don't drink and drive.

  • Go with friends on a fest tour by bus or train.

  • If you drive, have a designated driver who won't drink alcohol during the fest and will get your group home safely.

  • Make arrangements ahead of time at a local hotel, pension, or Gasthaus to spend the night if you plan to attend an out of town fest.

  • Don’t take children to night events when the partying gets intense. Consider going earlier in the day with the family.

  • Practice good situational awareness. Be aware of your surroundings and be alert for signs of possible trouble (such as loud, obnoxious people) and keep away from these situations.

  • Don't get involved or try to stop fights or other disturbances.

  • Remember that people are at the fest to have a good time. Ease up and be tolerant.

  • Observe posted rules in fest tents.

  • Don't flash your money around. You can find pickpockets even in the smallest villages.

  • Remember, credit cards are useless at fests.

  • Use your common sense.

  • Have fun. That’s what festivals are for.

Festivals are a way of life in Germany, and they provide Americans the opportunities for experiencing the culture, meeting people, seeing new places, eating local foods and drinking beer and wine all while having a good time. Be sure to follow these tips for a great fest experience!
