As England slowly emerges from winter and into spring, it’s time to stretch out those travel legs and discover the fascinating landscapes our host country has to offer. One of the more recent UNESCO World Heritage designees is home to more than 14 lakes, the highest peak in England and both the largest and deepest lakes in the nation. Welcome to the lovely Lake District.
Formed from ancient glaciers, the Lake District is a stunning example of Mother Nature at her finest. Rocky lakeshores are surrounded by steep, craggy cliffs and lowland valleys. Villages and market towns dot the rugged landscape, filled with thatched-roof stone cottages, flocks of sheep and reminders of the rich agricultural history of days past. During the autumn months, a dazzling display of fiery red, copper and golden leaves blanket the green hillsides before sliding into the cold winter months.
Taking a couple of days to unwind, visitors have their choice of pitching a traditional tent, renting a caravan or glamping pod, or enjoying the view from a balcony in a hotel. There is a plethora of hiking trails zigzagging across the district, offering breathtaking panoramas. If you’re feeling adventurous, join a guided hike up Scafell Pike—the tallest mountain in England. Or hop on a mountain bike and trek your way through the dense forests and dirt trails. Since you’re near plenty of lakes, head out to the water on a kayak or boat for an afternoon of fun.
For those needing a slightly different shot of adrenaline, head to nearby Yorkshire Dales National Park. Rather than explore above ground, head deep below the Earth’s surface and discover a vast network of caves and tunnels. However, if you’re not too keen on the underground, spend the day in Brockhole on Windemere. This lakeside beauty spot offers something for everyone, including archery, miniature golf, go-karts and more. You can also head up the hill to Treetop Lake District and traverse your way through the trees on several different rope courses and zip lines. Another great option (and one of my favorites) is to walk through the High Street of Ambleside and stop for a locally brewed pint and enjoy the scenery outside.
From ancient Roman ruins to literary museums and magnificent views, the Lake District will leave you feeling nostalgic and mesmerized and wanting to book your next trip back.
