Just because you’re not going to Grandma’s for Thanksgiving doesn’t mean you can’t have fun over the long weekend. The holiday provides service members, civilians and their families with a great opportunity to travel around Europe. Because no major German holidays coincide with this most beloved American tradition, you are sure to find fewer crowds no matter where you go. November is a low season of European travel. For this reason, many travel agencies, airlines, and hotels offer discounted rates. An added bonus of traveling during this period is that, since Thursday is a federal holiday, you will have to take few, if any, days off of work or school. Opportunities abound for travel around this time of year; all you have to do is pick a destination and get prepared to have the time of your life.

Interested in one last sun-filled vacation before the blistery cold of the winter months sets in? Why not venture out on a luxurious cruise throughout the enchanting waters of the Mediterranean Sea? These holidays afford a great opportunity to tank up on some sun before the cold of the winter months settles in.

Wanting something more seasonal? Perhaps you are looking forward to the holiday season ahead. What better way to get into the spirit than with the smell of roasted chestnuts, a hot glass of Glühwein and Christmas decorations galore? Most Christmas markets open right before the first Advent Sunday, which is the Sunday after Thanksgiving this year. In need a more action-packed trip? November brings with it the commencement of winter sports season. Get a jumpstart into winter with a fun-filled ski trip.

If you are planning on a traditional Thanksgiving holiday, not to worry, you still have plenty of options for great travel. After filling your bellies and hearts with food and love, take your loved ones on a trip they are sure to never forget. There really is no better way to celebrate family and friends than by experiencing a fun-filled travel adventure together. No matter where you are stationed, Germany and its surrounding areas offer plenty of possibilities for short day or weekend trips. One possibility is to take advantage of the opportunity to visit some of the more well-known cities and attractions, such as Berlin, Munich or Neuschwanstein Castle. These places can be unpleasant during the peak season, but with European travel at a low point during November, the holiday provides the perfect time to visit these astounding destinations.

Thanksgiving is a time for celebrating special moments with friends and family. What better way to do this than to explore world-famous destinations with those dearest to you? Take advantage of this great time to travel. See your installation travel offices for more information on Thanksgiving trips.
