If you’re a movie lover, but can’t quite muster the hours-long flight to Orlando or Hollywood, you’ll be happy to discover some movie magic in your own German backyard. Tucked away on the outskirts of Grünwald, just south of Munich, is one of Germany’s oldest and largest film studios: Bavaria Filmstadt.

Opened in 1919 as Bavaria Film, some of Germany’s most beloved televisions series and feature films have been shot and produced here. Visitors can tour different sets, including “Asterix” and “Vicky the Viking.” Anyone who grew up in the eighties will appreciate sets and scenery from 1984’s “The Neverending Story,” including a life-size Falkor, the luck dragon. Classic cinema enthusiasts will recognize the submarine and props from the German masterpiece, “Das Boot.”

In addition to the 90-minute guided tours, Bavaria Filmstadt also offers a 4D motion cinema experience, a stunt show and Bullyversum — an interactive and hands-on exhibit for all ages. There are plenty of activities to keep the wiggles at bay, and a McDonald’s on site for when the hunger pangs hit.

Bavaria Filmstadt is open year-round, closing only Dec. 24 and 25. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the high season (April-November) and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the low season (November–March).
