EUROPE

()

Though the famous cities of Europe are well worth the visit, sometimes it’s nice to do something out of the ordinary. Instead of going to yet another sprawling city, consider staying on a farm, vineyard or other rural venue and taking part in the travel trend of agritourism. Agritourism is a great way to participate in local activities and learn about the culture. The activities vary but could include feeding animals or picking fruits and vegetables. These activities can help both children and adults have a better understanding of where their food comes from.

Agritourism in Europe is filled with romantic farmhouses, hillside villas, fluffy animals and gorgeous rural landscapes. For example, in Arezzo, Italy you can stay in a charming farmhouse that is surrounded by oak trees, vineyards, olive groves and a beautiful meadow where horses graze. You could also visit Ciumarna, Romania, where you’ll stay on a working farm that grows organic produce and raises cows and chickens. Fancy a trip to Albania? Why not visit Scandiano, where you will stay with a family that raises dairy cows, harvests grapes for wine and makes jams from fresh fruits. Imagine how delicious your breakfast will be with fresh bread and homemade jam!

When you embark on an agritourism adventure, remember you are going to a rural area and not a five-star resort. This is an opportunity to truly understand how people thrive in their countries and produce various foods. Get ready to roll up your sleeves and get a little dirty. You’ll likely hit the bed totally exhausted, but happy with the work you’ve accomplished and the things you learned about agriculture in a foreign country!
