Spring is in the air! Can’t you feel it? It’s time for me to get out and about for a girls’ day with my mom! We’ve done the spa thing. As relaxing as that is, sometimes you need something new. Being in a different country creates a challenge to come up with ideas. Flowers and sweet are enjoyable, but let’s put a new spin on it.

This year, consider treating your mom to a special trip to the delightful city of Bonn. Amidst the treasure trove of history are these two gems to get you in that girlie mood.

Smell the roses

Strolling through gardens is not usually a “guy thing,” so our family tends to breeze through or skip any garden unless it says Biergarten (beer garden). Here is a perfect opportunity to genuinely enjoy this 400-year-old masterpiece of the Bonn Botanic Gardens at Poppelsdorf Palace. The Baroque-inspired gardens are part of the University of Bonn and is mostly used for educational purposes now. It contains approximately 11,000 different types of plants and flowers. They also have a relatively new 2,500 square meter conservatory for plants best grown in warmer, more tropical-type environments. You are more than welcome to roam around at your own pace. However, guided tours can be arranged with Freundeskreis Botanische Garten. Admission is free on weekdays and three euros on Sundays and public holidays in the summer.

If you have time, take in the magnificence of the Poppelsdorf Palace itself. Not only are the gardens breathtaking, but the palace will amaze you as well.

Satisfy your sweet tooth

Gummy Bears are a classic candy that almost everyone enjoys, so you don’t want to miss the world’s first HARIBO store. There are shelves upon shelves of various gummies and other candies manufactured by HARIBO and MAOAM. Treat your gals to a family-friendly bar - a candy bar! There you can mix and match your favorites candies for purchase. The candy floors are so overwhelming, you’ll hardly know where to start.

City highlights

It’s totally acceptable to consume large amounts of candy if you’re walking at the same time, right? So I recommend you meander around the city and check out Beethoven House and Beethovenhalle, Cherry Blossom Avenue (Heerstrasse), the Market Square (Marktplatz) with the old Rathaus and Bonn Minster. If it happens to be raining (yes, hard to imagine in Germany), the Alexander Koenig Museum and Deutches Museum are the perfect escape and will still allow you to get a glimpse into the city’s rich history.

Spoil your mama with flowers and sweets in a totally different way this year in Bonn.
