Germany’s capital, Berlin, is unlike many German cities. Its vibrancy, modern landmarks and art scene are what makes this urban city worth visiting. However, between all the galleries and trendy shops, your wallet may want a break. Check out this list of affordable, yet enjoyable things to do.
1. Lace up your sneakers and track your steps by participating in Sandeman’s free walking tour. The tours are held daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. starting from the Brandenburg Gate. Tipping is highly appreciated.
2. Take the free lift to the Reichtag’s glass dome to gaze out at this vibrant city. The Reichtag is home to Germany’s parliament.
3. Be humbled at the Holocaust memorial, a tribute to commemorate the victims. Admission is free.
4. Get cultured on “Museum Island,” which consists of the Pergamonmuseum, Bodenmuseum, Neues Museum, Alte Nationalgaliere and the Altes Museum.Tip: Purchase a three-day pass that provides free entry to over 30 exhibitions and museums. These tickets cost 29 euros.
5. Snap pics of the Brandenburg Gate, which was erected in 1791 after the restoration of order during the Batavian Revolution.
6. Chow down on Berlin’s famous curry wursts, which cost around 3 euros!
7. Other than their wursts, Berlin is also known for its unique street art. Marvel at the talented artists’ work as you jaunt down East Side Gallery of the Berlin Wall, Boxhager Platz, Friedrichshain and other streets.
8. If the weather permits, grab a picnic blanket and sandwiches as you plant yourself on the green grass at Tiergarten, a lush park that is home to the Berlin Zoo.
9. Pay a visit to Checkpoint Charlie, the border crossing during the Cold War.
10. Ride the “Historic City Cruise” river cruise tour. Tickets are 15 euros for adults and 7.50 euros for children under 14. Children under 6 are free.
11. Rummage through the flea market at Marheinekeplatz and see if you can make one man’s trash your treasure. The market is open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
12. Stroll through Tempelhof, a former airfield that used to be an airport. Today, you can barbeque, cycle, rollerblade, grab a refreshing drink or simply people watch.
13. Peruse through the markets at Mauerpark which takes place every Sunday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. This park was a former part of the Berlin Wall, hence the name “wall park.”
14. Walk back in time at the Berlin Wall Memorial which stretches 1.4 kilometers. This central memorial site will show you the former German division between the East and West.
15. Indulge in some döner kebabs, which can be found in just about every corner.
16. Raise your glasses to cheap drinks at Lerchen und Eulen and reward yourself for planning a well-budgeted trip.
Although exploring a city such as Berlin can be expensive, enjoying yourself can still be done even on a budget.
