The sleepy village of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, approximately 90 minutes south of Munich, is one of the more popular alpine destinations for U.S. servicemembers. Situated just on the outskirts of town, Edelweiss Lodge and Resort is one of only five Armed Forces Recreation Center (AFRC) resorts in the world. While this cozy resort brings a touch of home, there are other affordable lodging options in the area as well.

Garmisch Army Lodging. It’s easy to get this hotel confused with Edelweiss. Both are located on post. However, Garmisch Army Lodging is easier on the budget. Rooms are only $38 per night and $7.50 for each extra occupant. All rooms include a full-size bed, small refrigerator, microwave, iron, safe, and flat-screen television with access to AFN and local cable channels. Rollaway beds, pack ’n plays, plug adapters, coffee makers and hair dryers are provided on request. To make a reservation, contact Army Lodging at DSN (314) 440-3308 or civilian +49 08821-750-3308.

Best Western Hotel Obermühle. With its friendly and English-speaking staff, Best Western Hotel Obermühle is another great option for the budget-conscious traveler. Located in the center of town, it is an easy walk to local restaurants and bars. For winter sports enthusiasts, take advantage of the free shuttle to area ski resorts. Or take a break from the slopes and relax in the Finnish sauna and steam baths. At time of publication, rates averaged 116 euros per night for a Smart Comfort room.

Iglu-Dorf Zugspitze. For a truly one-of-a-kind experience, why not go a little rugged and stay in an igloo? Iglu-Dorf Zugspitze is located atop Germany’s highest peak. With breathtaking views of Austria and Germany, standard igloos are fairly inexpensive, starting at 119 euros per adult. If you’re feeling really adventurous, you can actually build your own igloo. Amenities include high-quality expedition sleeping bags, welcome drinks and snacks, a fondue dinner, use of the whirlpool and mixed-gender sauna, and breakfast.

Hotel Edelweiss Garni. With a touch of elegance and old world charm, rooms at Hotel Edelweiss Garni feature classic décor and balconies with stunning panoramas of the jagged Bavarian Alps. Nestled on the banks of the Loisach River, the cozy and intimate surroundings give the feel of a bed and breakfast. Enjoy a sumptuous free breakfast buffet before taking a shuttle to the area ski resorts. Pets are allowed for a small fee.

Dorint Sporthotel Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Just a stone’s throw from the Olympic Ski Stadium, the Dorint Sporthotel is an excellent option for families. With spacious rooms, kitchenettes, turndown service in the evenings and an extensive playground (including a life-sized outdoor chess board) for little ones, it truly has something for everyone. The entrance to the Höllentalklamm gorge is within walking distance. Take an evening stroll through the gorge with torches illuminating the icy rock walls. Go for a quick dip in the indoor pool after a long day on the slopes or challenge your friends to a friendly match of ping-pong in the game room. A delicious breakfast is included with your stay, and pets are welcome.
