Once you arrive in England and get settled in, you can immerse yourself in the local culture.

DINING

  • You are unlikely to be rushed during a meal, so people often stay for two hours or more.

  • Customer service is different than what you may be used to.

  • Servers may not check on you often, so take the initiative to ask if you need something.

  • Ice is typically not included with your beverages.

  • Tipping is not required at pubs. Menus in restaurants will note whether or not tipping is included. If not, you can give 10 to 15 percent.

Shopping

  • Bring your own bag or be prepared to pay roughly five pence per plastic bag

  • Most shops will be open Monday through Saturday from approximately 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with shorter hours on Sundays. Supermarkets may be open longer hours depending on their location.

  • Many supermarkets offer online ordering and delivery services. Consider registering for a free supermarket points card to get savings. which can result in savings in store and online. Be on the lookout for market days near you so you can buy fresh local produce and goodies.

  • Look for time limits on signs at car parks (parking lots) and follow them to avoid being ticketed.

  • Have a pound or trolley (cart) coin with you to use as a deposit at some supermarkets.

  • When paying to park, overestimate how long you plan to spend. Overstaying your ticket can be expensive and may result in a fine.

  • Consider using park-and-ride services in the bigger towns and cities.
