Claddagh ring

Claddagh ring ()

If you find yourself traveling through the beautiful rolling hills and quaint villages of Ireland, a unique symbol may have piqued your interest. Comprised of two hands, a heart and a crown, the Claddagh can be seen everywhere throughout the country. Just a glimpse through the windows of jewlery stores and souvenir shops will be enough to make you want to take this symbolic souvenir home with you. However, to appreciate the Claddagh, you have to appreciate its story first.

THE ACCIDENTAL JEWELER

Situated on the western side of Galway, the Claddagh was once a booming fishing village that not only caught fish, but also was said to be the origin of the Claddagh ring. Created by Richard Joyce—a jewelry maker who learned the trade when he was kidnapped by pirates heading to Algeria, where he became an indentured servant—invented this ring when he returned to Galway. The Claddagh ring’s design is a crowned heart embraced by two hands (the fede) and symbolizes friendship (the hands), love (the heart) and loyalty (the crown).

HOW TO WEAR IT

How you wear the Claddagh ring symbolizes your relationship status, so be cognizant of how you position the ring.

  • If you are married, wear the ring on your left hand with the heart facing inward.

  • If the ring is worn on your right hand with the heart facing outward, you still have your   heart open. This position also indicates that you are single.

  • If you’re in a relationship, wear the ring on your right hand with the heart facing inward.
