EUROPE

()

My husband and I enjoy the “Amazing Race”. We’ve been watching it for years. Had I known we would find ourselves living in Germany one day, I definitely would’ve taken better notes during their European adventures.

Recently, we were watching an episode that took the teams to Italy. Their challenge involved a restaurant inside a tram, so they had to eat dinner while touring the city looking for information for their next clue. The tram was decorated in a vintage, old-world style to make you feel as if you’ve travelled back in time. Immediately, this goes onto our “To Do” list. It’s like killing two birds with one stone! When I got a chance to do a little research, I discovered that it’s a thing in multiple cities in Italy, to include Milan, Turin and Rome.

This can be a great way to see the sights of the city at night while enjoying fabulous local cuisine. Here are three things to know before you go.

Reservations are a must.

Some people aren’t planners. They like to just see where the wind takes them. In this case, it will not take you to a tram restaurant unless the wind blows about three days in advance. Most places require a reservation at least that far ahead so the chef and wait staff are prepared.

Dinner starts when the chickens are in bed.

Most dinner reservations begin at 8 p.m. or later. Therefore, if you’re travelling with young children or your stomach just can’t hold out that long, this may not be your best idea. However, this would make an excellent date or girls night activity.

It will cost you.

This will not be your most inexpensive meal (at least 60 euros per person). However, you’re paying for a unique dining experience in a picturesque, historic city. Imagine eating gnocchi and sipping Chianti while riding by the Arco della Pace! It is not something one gets to do every day, so live in the moment.

Not to take anything away from dining al fresco at an Italian café, which is something one must experience, this mobil dining excursion will bring the city and all its glory right to your table. Buon appetito!
