Ghoulish laughs at “The Addams Family”
Stars and Stripes October 24, 2023
“The Addams Family” musical at the Amelia Earhart Playhouse in Wiesbaden leans heavily into the funny, and quite dark, humor of this macabre family. Directed by Amy Ennis, the talented 27-member cast successfully breathes life into some deathly family matters.
“Normal is an illusion. We aren’t normal.”
The moody stage is set from the atmospheric lobby snack bar where audience members sip their “morbid mocktails” (complete with skewered eyeballs) surrounded by small dark candles and black roses.
When Thing appears through the curtains prior to showtime, it is apparent that the cast and crew of this performance went all out on special effects, props and costumes. This hand-some fellow was all over the place, bringing laughs throughout the house. Other details such as the ancestor costumes – a red indicator I won’t spoil – and a set of moving shackles add much to the special effects.
Pugsley’s reaction to those shackles, however, was priceless. The talent in this cast makes every second a ghoulish good time. From Uncle Fester’s moon-loving scene to the laugh riot that was a game of full disclosure, the performance will leave you dying for more.
I haven’t even mentioned yet that “The Addams Family” talent shines brightest in it’s musical numbers! Indeed, Fester sings to the moon, Gomez and Morticia sing to each other (of course), and Wednesday sings about her new interests in “Pulled.” Wednesday’s stage presence and voice were fantastic, as were her costume and makeup.
This performance is perfectly timed for the season. Go! And be prepared for a ghastly good time.
