Known as one of the most beautiful wine festivals in Germany, Speyer’s Wein am Dom will delight vino connoisseurs and novices alike.
On Saturday, April 1 and Sunday, April 2, 150 vintners will gather in the ancient city on the Rhine River to offer more than 800 wines from six participating downtown locations: the Historical Museum of the Pfalz (Historisches Museum der Pfalz), the Alter Stadtsaal theater, the Friedrich-Spee-Haus, the historic town hall (Historischer Ratssaal), and the Kulturhof Flachsgasse and Kulturraum galleries.
Sample regional reds and whites from 1 to 7 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday as you take in the city sights. If you’re eager to know more about local winemaking trends, consider joining a guided tour. Groups meet in front of the old town hall and Kulturhof Flachsgasse to begin the journey at 1:30 p.m. both days.
Want to continue reveling in Germany’s best wines after dark? Enjoy disco beats, local wines and culinary treats at the “Wine Grooves” party Saturday evening. The fun kicks off at 8 p.m.
What to know before you go:
1. Purchase your tickets in advance.
Don’t get caught at the event without a pass. Choose between single-day tickets for 25 euros or two-day tickets for 39 euros. The price includes admission fees, wine and Sekt tastings, and an informative brochure. You can also use your stub for a free return trip on the Rhein-Neckar (VRN) public transportation system. All buses, trams and trains can be used until 3 a.m. the next morning.
To purchase tickets, submit a request via phone (06321-9177610) or email no later than March 24. Transfer the amount owed to the Chamber of Agriculture Rheinland-Pfalz at Sparkasse Rhein-Haardt.

2. Plan to spend the night.

Founded by the Romans nearly a thousand years ago, Speyer is considered one of Germany’s oldest cities. As a result, there are plenty of fascinating historical sites to visit around town. Walk through the old city gate (Altpörtel), and stop to see the statue of Martin Luther in Gedächtniskirche. Whether or not you have kids tagging along, the Technikmuseum and Sea Life Center are full of fun ways to spend your day. Before you go, don’t forget to visit Speyer Cathedral and pay homage to the eight Holy Roman emperors and German kings buried beneath the high altar.
