The trials of modern dating are displayed in all of their messy glory in the Bavaria Performing Arts performance of “First Date.” This romantic comedy brings together an unlikely couple on a blind date, complete with their entourage of inner critics.
Directed by Rachel Harper, this musical begins with a montage of dating disasters before homing in on a New York city restaurant where we are introduced to banker Aaron (Andrew Clark) – your quintessential ‘nice guy,’ optimistic and nervous for his first blind date experience. When his artistic, serial-dater match Casey (Caelynn Baydo) arrives, we are instantly drawn into the palpably awkward, funny experience of watching these two opposites try to navigate being set up together.
The small cast of seven performers bring Broadway-worthy singing voices and stage talent evidenced by the numerous character changes throughout the play.
You see, while Casey and Aaron appear to be the only two people on this date, they are both actually accompanied by the expectations and judgement of family and friends (in their heads, of course). The humorous singing portions delve into each character’s inner dialog, acting out hysterical imaginary scenarios and some jaded memories.
The entire space gives off city vibes, from the tall building sets and restaurant props to the dashing ‘night on the town’ costumes, we are immersed the New York dating scene. Even the theater seating is set up as cocktail tables, bringing the audience into theming of the story.
“This is your bailout!”
More than once, Casey’s friend calls to offer her the chance to get out of the situation. Surprising herself, Casey stays. There is something about Aaron that makes her curious, even though he is nothing like the kind of guys she is usually attracted to. At the same time, Aaron has his own baggage to deal with. We laugh along, but at some point, everyone wonders why these two were set up to begin with.
Intended for an adult audience, this comedic performance is the perfect night out for couples, and a dose of humor therapy for those in the depth of their own dating journey. Grab your friends and enjoy laughing at the truth about blind dating.
In the end, we learn to think outside the box and find the humor when it comes to dating. After all, love can happen when we least expect it, and sometimes in the least likely candidate.
“First Date” is performed at the Bavaria Performing Arts theater on Tower Barracks in building 124.
