Aviano Community and Schools Theater performance of “Disney, Pixar Finding Nemo Kids” (Shawna Haas)
Last week Aviano Community and Schools Theater presented an all-youth production of “Disney, Pixar Finding Nemo Kids.”
This fun, whimsical story featured cast members in grades 1-5 and a backstage crew of high school students. In addition, the show was directed by high school student Genesis Diaz, with Annika Haas as music director and Charlotte White as the choreographer. These youth directors learned how to facilitate rehearsals and think of all the details that go into a theatrical production.
As the show opens, we meet clownfish Nemo (Maxwell N) and his father Marlin (Christian N). Nemo goes on an accidental adventure of a lifetime and eventually ends up in a dentist’s office fish tank in Sydney. His father frantically tries to find him and along the way befriends a forgetful tang fish named Dory (Catherine D).
With the entire cast in fun, colorful costumes, the dance choreography and singing brought life to the vibrant performance. There were also huge jellyfish props and a big snorkel mask that added to the minimalistic set design. In addition, the team had Kindergarten, first and second grade Aviano Elementary School students make sea creature art to fill the audience space, making the entire theater feel like an underwater world.
One audience favorite was the song “Go with the Flow” which saw a group of turtles lead Marlin and Dory to Sydney to find Nemo.
As the story progresses, Nemo’s new “tank gang” friends hatch a plan for Nemo to escape the fish tank and return to the big, blue sea where he reunites with his father. In the end, Marlin learns to let Nemo be more independent.
Between the young cast and youth production team, this show was a full community venture featuring a creative team of talented kids.
