Woman leading senior citizens' fitness class ()

Whether you find yourself constantly moving with the military or you are just wanting to work for yourself, set your hours and be your own boss, entrepreneurship may be a path for you. More women are turning to entrepreneurship for employment so they can have more control over their work/life balance. In 2019, 42 percent of small businesses in America were owned and operated by women, up from 4.6 percent in 1972 and 29 percent in 2010, according to earthweb.com.

Of course, starting your own business comes with various complications, such as start-up and production costs, scheduling, marketing designs and flooded markets. You can combat some of the cons, such as scheduling dedicated time to your fledgling business, by getting away from distractions and working from a local café or coffee shop. You can get some productivity out of this time just for you and your ideas while supporting a local business when you purchase a tasty treat to go with those marked checkboxes. Bonus points if it’s a woman-owned business.

Every month, we’re presenting five business ideas for women based on different themes such as education, hospitality and care, content creation and editing. This month, we are covering fitness and nutrition businesses.

Healthy (and delicious) snack food chef/baker

Everyone wants to eat healthier; however, crispy salty potato chips always seem to sound better than carrot sticks. Nonetheless, there have been many successful strides in creating tasty, yet healthy, snacks. I have recently become obsessed with the “Veggies Made Great” brand and watching “hidden veggies” recipe reels on social media. If you know creative ways to make the healthiest foods taste yummy, there is a need for your skills. Vantagemarketresearch.com has found that the global healthy snack market was valued at 89 billion dollars in 2022.

Wellness coach, yoga teacher or personal trainer

If fitness is your passion, share that with others while your clients pay for your expertise. Yoga is known to be a great stress reliever and can help people unwind in a healthy way. We are also in swimsuit season and people are trying to look their best for the ‘Gram. You can help them find their motivation and goals for fitness, whatever they are. According to salary.com, the average salary for a personal trainer is $65,631.

Nutritionist

Food can be delicious. Nonetheless, food is primarily fuel for our bodies and different bodies have varying reactions to foods. Nutritionists help their clients understand the science of food and what foods fuel their bodies best. According to indeed.com, the average salary for a nutritionist is $41,730.

Fitness apparel designer

If you love fashion and fitness, combine those loves by designing fitness apparel. Think about how your current apparel can improve and bring that to the local market or online. If you love creating t-shirt artwork, websites like www.redbubble.com allow independent artists to sell their unique creations on items like sweatshirts, tanks and leggings for someone’s next workout. Statista.com predicts that by 2026, the global sports apparel market will be valued at 249 billion dollars.

Private sport coaching

Were you an exceptional athlete growing up? More and more these days parents are trying to help their kids gain that competitive edge to help them obtain coveted sports teams spots, college scholarships, or event chances at Olympic gold. Opendorse.com has published an informative article about monetizing private lessons.

For spouses living overseas, the Institute for Veterans and Military Families produced a helpful SOFA “Portability Roadmap” to help you navigate working overseas in various countries. Always check with your local, state, and national legal regulations before starting and running a business.

MYCAA (My Career Advancement Account) is a scholarship program for military spouses of service members E-1 through E-6, W-1 through W-2 and O-1 through O-3 and Military One Source provides information on eligible programs (including nutrition and fitness). MYCAA “provides up to $4,000 in financial assistance to eligible military spouses for the pursuit or maintenance (including continuing education courses) of a license, certification, or associate degree necessary to gain employment in an occupation or career field.” I used MYCAA back in 2017 to get my 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Certificate.
