With warmer temperatures and ample fresh produce, salads are a popular dish during summer months. According to a BBC report, a recent E. coli outbreak in the U.K. was likely caused by arugula (also called rucola and rocket) imported from Mediterranean countries.
Keep these tips in mind when serving fresh fruits and vegetables in your home:
Wash your hands for 30 seconds with warm water a soap.
Wash all produce under running (not standing) water. Use a colander for berries, chop broccoli and cauliflower before washing, and buy a salad spinner to make salad washing easier.
Rinse prepackaged, washed greens to be on the safe side.
Scrub potatoes and other densely skinned fruits and vegetables with a scrub brush.
Do not use hand or dish soap to clean food.
Pay attention to where your produce comes from, and monitor the news for any recalls our outbreaks.
