Sam was really starting to annoy Lena.
“Listen,” she said, “We’re only friends because our parents work together and we’re neighbors, that’s it!”
Sam was a little taller than Lena, but acted so clueless most of the time. He liked sports and had inger hair with so many freckles he and Lena couldn’t even count them! They were packing to go on a roadtrip to a campsite for Lena’s dad’s birthday trip.
“Can’t we just finish packing?” Lena complained. Lena had long curly blonde hair and bright blue eyes. People often said she was a “leader” but she couldn’t tell if that was a good thing or not. Sam could tell something was wrong with Lena. Lena wouldn’t admit it, but she was kind-of bossy, and Sam knew he couldn’t really say that because they were actually best friends.
“Finally, we’re done packing!”
— Lena grumbled.
“What?” Sam said.
She rolled her eyes and left to go sit in the car.
“Jada!” Dad called, “Could you go get the cake please?”
Sam’s sister said, “yes,” and with that two cars full of two families were off.
Lena was annoyed at Sam for most of the trip and just looked out of the window and watched the world pass by. After what seemed like four hours of boredom to Lena, she got out of the car and saw someone she didn’t want to see, Sam.

“Why are you still mad at me, Lena?”
— Sam yelled.
“I’m not, can we unpack all the work we have been doing for hours?!” she huffed as she tromped away.
“Fine, I’m sorry! I will try not to do that again.”
Lena laughed. Then she told Sam to get over it.
They finished unpacking and setting up camp and by the time the two kids went exploring in
the woods, it was already time for dinner. Sam thought he wasn’t hungry until he saw the food.
Wow! This looks so good, he thought. Though Lena looked at him confused, so maybe he said it out loud.
And after dinner they roasted marshmallows over the fire and told stories under the stars until it was time for bed.

Before they went to bed, Lena hugged her dad and said, “Good night dad” before she left to go to sleep in her tent. Tomorrow will be his birthday, and she was ecstatic.
Lena woke Sam up by shaking him.
“Wake up!”
— she whispered.
“What?”
“Shh!” Lena shushed. “We have to get the presents and decorations ready,” Lena said; she hoped Sam would understand that.
Minutes later Mrs. Porter, Sam’s mom, asked, “Jada do you have the cake?!” Jada was Sam’s older sister. Lena thought Jada was so cool, but she would never say that out loud.
“Umm,” Jada paused, her face went blank, then she said, “I forgot it.”
“What?!” Lena exclaimed.
Before everyone looked at Jada, Sam blurted out that he had an idea. Even Sam was shocked he had an idea, and it was actually a good one.
“Well,” Lena snapped, “What is it?”
“Jada, do we have marshmallows left over from yesterday?” Sam asked.
“Umm, I think?” Jada said.
“Perfect! We can use the marshmallows as cake!”
— said Sam.
Everyone Looked at Sam in shock.
“Wow Sam, that’s not bad,” Lena exclaimed.
“I know, we have to hurry!”
When they finished, Sam thought it was best if Lena woke her dad up.
“Okay everyone ready?!” Sam asked, as Lena got her dad.
One, two, three, Sam thought.
“Surprise,” everyone yelled!
“Wow, is that a cake?” Lena’s dad asked.
“Yup!” Sam replied, and thought that it was the best cake ever!
