Senior Nicolas Cicchi participates in the high jump for Bahrain Middle High School (Sabrina Cicchi)
The Bahrain School’s track and field season began on a high note in Week one, as two exceptional seniors secured their spots at the European Championships.
Nicolas Cicchi and Matthew Mendoza delivered outstanding performances, hitting qualifying marks that set an inspiring tone for what promises to be a brief yet exciting season. No strangers to elite competition, these Falcons continue to showcase their remarkable dedication and talent, solidifying their place among the best.
Being a Bahrain Falcon comes with its own set of challenges. Unlike many other DODEA South Division II schools, the Falcons have no home meets with other schools where students and parents can line the field to cheer them on. Supportive chants and familiar surroundings are replaced by the logistical challenges of traveling to compete.
Even more difficult, Bahrain athletes have just three opportunities to compete against their peers before the European Championships in May. These limited chances to qualify underscore the significance of their accomplishments and their determination to succeed despite the odds.
Senior Nicolas Cicchi, a recent transfer from the American Overseas School of Rome (AOSR), made an immediate impact for the Falcons. With an impressive high jump performance, Cicchi secured his qualification for the European Championships, marking a triumphant return to the competition.
But the high jump is only one piece of his story. Cicchi is also chasing a qualifying time in the 800 meters, demonstrating his versatility and determination to return to the Europeans in multiple events.
Cicchi is no stranger to success. Last fall, he led Bahrain’s cross-country team to a European-qualifying season, showcasing his leadership and competitive edge. His strong start in the high jump this spring signals that he’s ready to continue raising the bar—not just for himself but for his entire team.

Senior Matthew Mendoza had a breakout performance in the discus, launching an incredible throw of 39.36 meters. This personal best earned Mendoza his first-ever qualification for the European Championships in track and field. The accomplishment is a landmark moment in his career, rewarding years of effort and perseverance.
What makes Mendoza’s achievement even more impressive is his dedication to leadership off the field. Serving as the Bahrain Middle High School President, Mendoza exemplifies what it means to balance academics, athletics and leadership. His role as a student leader adds another dimension to his already packed schedule, yet he continues to excel in every arena.
While this may be his first track and field qualification, Mendoza is not a newcomer to European competition. He competed in tennis during the fall of 2024, showcasing his athleticism across multiple sports. Now, turning his focus to discus, Mendoza is proving he has the strength, discipline and poise to compete on the big stage.

Junior Braden Youngblood also made waves in Week one, earning a wildcard qualifying distance in the long jump. Though it isn’t an automatic qualification, Youngblood’s performance puts him firmly in the mix as he works toward securing his spot at the Europeans in May.
With weeks of competition ahead, Youngblood’s determination will undoubtedly drive him closer to his goal.

The Week one results reflect the Falcons’ senior talent and competitive spirit. Cicchi and Mendoza’s qualifications not only highlight their individual achievements but also set an inspiring example for their teammates. Mendoza’s dual role as an athlete and School President adds a layer of leadership and motivation for everyone around him. Meanwhile, Youngblood’s wildcard effort adds an exciting element to the team dynamic, with more athletes ready to step up as the season unfolds.
Despite the challenges they face, the Falcons continue their campaign with grit and focus. With no home meets and limited qualifying opportunities, their early successes send a strong message about their resilience and ambition. All eyes will be on these standout athletes as they prepare for the European Championships, proving that Bahrain School’s track and field team is more than ready to rise to the occasion.
