Summer nights were made for the Rhein in Flammen firework show

Don’t think the Fourth of July fireworks will be enough? Well, you’re in luck! Every summer, the Rhein area holds a magical firework display everyone can enjoy.

Dating back to the 1700s, the first recorded firework show was held to welcome the new Elector Johann Philipp to his new home in Koblenz. Following this tradition, the royal treatment was given to Queen Victoria in 1845 to welcome her to the Rhein. However, the firework display and light show known today as Rhein in Flammen did not become a tradition until after WW2 in 1948.

Intrigued? Thinking of taking advantage of the warm summer nights that never seem to last here in Germany? If you said yes to any of those, Rhein in Flammen will not disappoint.

The event begins on July 6 in Rudesheim. Boats will embark during the late afternoon or early evening to the town of Bingen and travel a full circle back to Rudesheim by midnight. The firework display will take place in the middle between Bingen and Rudesheim. Fortunately, there are three more firework shows this summer, one on August 10 in Koblenz, September 14 in Oberwesel and September 21 in St. Goar.

If you have to plan for just one, August 10 is your best bet. From illuminated boats floating across the water under the stars to the three-day summer fest in Koblenz happening at that time, there is something for everyone. Additionally, the Koblenz fireworks show is the largest show out of all four events, so you really don’t want to miss out.

This event has the potential for both a day out with friends and family or a nice evening with a loved one. If you’re feeling a little more elegant, you may decide to take your loved one on a romantic boat ride where dinner and wine will be served (disclaimer: it is fairly pricey). People on a budget or looking for something more low-key, don’t fret! The light show itself is free of charge, all you have to do is find a cozy spot with a great vantage point to see the show!
