EUROPE

Although this summer has been exceptionally rainy in the U.K., the thundering roar that will no doubt be heard overhead in mid-July has nothing to do with summer storms and everything to do with the world’s largest military airshow. The Royal International Air Tattoo — also known as RIAT — takes to the skies July 19-21 at RAF Fairford, located in the picturesque Cotswolds approximately two hours east of central London.

What began July 20, 1969 as a military demonstration has evolved into a military spectacle featuring hundreds of aircraft from around the world. Static displays and jaw-dropping aerial demonstrations from more than 20 nations will thrill aviation buffs. This year marks the 50th anniversary of both RIAT and the Apollo moon landing, as well as the 70th anniversary of NATO. Special ceremonies will commemorate these historic occasions.
