In a galaxy not so far away, a testament to the international fame “Star Wars” has acquired stands tall. The observatory in Zweibrücken is now painted blue and white to resemble the famous robot R2D2.

Hubert Zitt, a science fiction super fan, works as an electro technology professor at the Zweibrücken University of Applied Sciences in Rhineland-Palatinate. He is known to give lectures that channel the force, specifically in his class called “The Physics of Star Trek” and at science fiction conventions around the world.

The observatory was given a facelift by a team of painters and Zitt’s very own father and students. Though the painting was completed in 2018, it took some time before the rest of the world caught wind of this little treasure.

The name of the town itself translates literally to two bridges and is the smallest independent city in Germany. If you are looking for more than just a neatly painted observatory, head to The Duke’s Castle Zweibrücken. It was once the residence of the dukes, but today is the seat of the Palatine Higher Regional court. Originally built from1720-1725, this Baroque masterpiece is a beautiful cultural monument.

If you happen to visit during the warmer months, the Rosengarten Zweibrücken is a lovely area for a stroll. Stop by the Small Shop of Roses for anything and everything rose related such as accessories, perfumes, table linens and more. Grab a piece of cake and a glass of lemonade and enjoy the sweet aroma of roses delicately floating through the air.

For something a little more active, head to Badeparadies, an indoor swimming are for the whole family. With a swimming pool, sports lanes, massage pool, children’s play area, waterslide, whirlpool and wave pool, this is a must-do for families. There are also saunas and even a samarium. Grab a snack at their restaurant if you need some energy and enjoy splashing in the pools!

While it may be your love of science fiction that brings you to Zweibrücken, make sure you stay to check out what else the town has to offer. From Baroque architecture to “Star Wars” robots, this town is full of charm.
