EUROPE

Back home in the states, you might well have heard of, or even participated in, a Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. The series of 5K runs and fitness events that first got off the ground in Texas back in 1983 raise funds to fight breast cancer, honor those who’ve survived it and memorialize those who fought the battle and lost. In 1998, the race went international with the staging of an event in Costa Rica and its expansion steadily continued. Nowadays, around one million people gather in over 140 cities worldwide to celebrate life and honor those lost to the disease. The pink ribbons and T-shirts associated with participation in the race are a potent and highly recognizable symbol of breast cancer awareness and support.

Think Pink Europe is a non-profit organization created in March 2018 by five organizations fighting breast cancer at the country level. Think Pink Europe’s stated goals are to improve the exchange of information, promote best practices in health care and research, reduce disparities in access to health care and close the health care gap between European countries. It’s also taken a role in promoting European editions of Race for the Cure.

The Think Pink Europe website shows a schedule of 24 Race for the Cure events to be organized between the months of May and December 2020 in the countries of Albania, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Georgia, Greece, Italy, Kosovo, Luxembourg, Moldova, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Serbia and Spain.

With the majority of these races taking place in September and October, would-be participants would have ample time to sign up for the events and organize flights, accommodation and other travel details. (Note inscription has yet to open for many of the events listed.)

A chance to explore new horizons, take part in a fun activity, and support charities engaged in the battle against the scourge of breast cancer: a trifecta of good reasons to run!
