Amsterdam has become a staple of the Netherlands. With its rich history like the Anne Frank house, it’s picturesque views of canals, its call to the outdoors with biking lanes everywhere or it’s partying atmosphere, Amsterdam has found a niche for all ages. However, Amsterdam can also be known for its philanthropy.

Amsterdam City Swim held every year on Sunday, September 8, is a charity event that raises money and awareness for ALS. ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or motor neuron disease) is a disease that still befuddles doctors all over the world. The cause is still questionable and the cure is nowhere in sight. People with ALS begin to lose motor functions and over time lose the ability to use many of their muscles including the ability to speak and walk. Many doctors are still researching for a cure and the only treatment for ALS patients at the moment is ensuring the utmost comfort of the patient. This is why the City of Amsterdam hosts Amsterdam City Swim every year to help raise money for the patients in the Netherlands and the research to find a cure.

Adult swimmers pay an entrance fee of 110 euro and are expected to raise a minimum of 400 euro while children are 65 euro and are only expected to raise a minimum of 100 euro. The children begin the day off with their 700m swim through the canal. After they finish, the main event starts. All adults must swim 2,018 meters through all of Amsterdam’s canals. During this time, onlookers from above the canals cheer them on. There’s even a DJ to ensure the crowd and the swimmers have a good time. All the canals that day are closed to any type of ships or boats. However, the party doesn’t stop with the race, take time to enjoy a cold beer or food made right form the grill at one of the food stands the event hosts.

Whether it’s philanthropy, swimming, music or food, Amsterdam City Swim has something for everyone. Go check it out and support a great cause!
