Just in time for Oktoberfest, a German court ruled hangovers are an ‘illness.’ Frankfurt judges made the decision in a case involving products that claim to cure hangovers like drink powders and hangover shots. The company, which was not named, was sued for making illegal health claims.

The court ruled, “Information about a food product cannot ascribe any properties for preventing, treating or healing a human illness or give the impression of such a property."

The judges said hangovers are a legitimate human illness since there is a small or temporary disruption in the body’s normal activity. The products claimed to treat fatigue, nausea and headaches.

There is even a medical term for hangovers, “Veisalgia,” from the Norwegian kveis (uneasiness following debauchery) and the Greek algia (pain).

There are ways to prevent a hangover like limiting your alcohol intake, staying hydrated and eating beforehand.
