EUROPE

For a man who never set foot outside his native land, the artist known by just one name left a lasting impact around the world.

Rembrandt, considered one of Europe’s great artists for his versatility and supreme mastery of light, shadow and texture, was also prolific. Over 300 paintings can be reliably attributed to the artist’s brush.

For a firsthand look at the genius of Rembrandt, there’s no need to travel to the Dutch city in which he secured his fame. An exhibition titled “Rembrandt in Amsterdam: Creativity and Competition” has brought about 60 of his works to Frankfurt, Germany.

Through January 30, 2022, the exhibition currently on view at the Städel Museum traces Rembrandt’s rise from a young and ambitious artist from Leiden to one of the most famed masters of the Dutch Golden Age. To tell the story within the context of this very special era in which he lived and worked, Rembrandt’s art is placed directly alongside that of his contemporaries. Approximately 140 paintings, prints and drawings from the 1630s through the mid-1650s are featured in the exhibition. The art on display has been loaned from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, London’s National Gallery, the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid, the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. and other prestigious museums.

Timed tickets to the exhibition go for 16 euros and are sold online in advance for specific dates and time slots. A parent’s own children under the age of 18 can enter free of charge at the same time. It is also possible to buy tickets directly at the museum, provided maximum visitor capacity has not yet been reached. Visitors to the Städel Museum are required to bring documents attesting to having been vaccinated against or recovered from COVID-19, or to present a negative test result.

Tickets are valid for the Städel collection and all special exhibitions, but note the section featuring the Old Masters Collection is currently closed to the public. For details, see https://www.staedelmuseum.de/en
