Fall is upon us, the days have grown shorter and the sun has set earlier and earlier each evening. That means Daylight Savings Time is coming to an end, this year on Sunday, Oct. 31 at 3 a.m., making it 2 a.m.
In the spring, clocks in Europe spring forward an hour for Daylight Saving Time (DST). This was originally designed to help conserve coal usage during World War I, and the time change became widely adopted following World War II.
There is no international standard when it comes to the DST date — dates are decided upon by individual governments or, in the case of Europe, the European Union (EU). Which is why here in Europe, our clocks “fall back” one week earlier than the United States, which does not recognize DST until the following weekend, Nov. 1.
Enjoy that extra hour of sleep this weekend!
