The city of Neustadt made the decision this week to cancel this year’s Mandelblütenfest set to take place at the end of the month. The annual almond bloom festival brings in tens of thousands of people to Gimmeldingen’s wine village.
Neustadt’s mayor said while there were no confirmed cases in the city, given the number of cases rising across Germany and Rheinland-Palatinate, the potential risk of spreading the infection was too high. Mayor Marc Weigel also pointed out large events need to have aid organizations and emergency services on-site and those resources are already spread too thin.
As of Thursday morning, there are 262 COVID-19 cases in Germany with seven in Rheinland-Palatinate. Updated infection numbers are posted to the Robert Koch Institut’s website.
