Summer may be inching toward a close, but there are still several chances to see dazzling fireworks light up the night sky before the nights get too chilly.

Rhine in Flames, Sept. 9 & Sept. 16

Taking place along the most scenic stretches of the Rhine River is the firework extravaganza, Rhine in Flames. Held several nights over the summer and into early fall, riverboats and spectators line the river for an unforgettable nighttime show.

No fireworks show would be complete with a market and festival throughout the day. On each of the following dates, expect delicious food and drink, along with lots of entertainment and live music. When the sun begins to set, snag a seat on a boat, or lay down a picnic blanket and get ready for the show. Fireworks typically start at 10 p.m. There are two shows remaining for 2017: Sept. 9 in Oberwesel, and Sept. 16 in St. Goar. Find out more info at the event’s official website: www.rhein-in-flammen.com.

Rhine River Lights, Aug.26, Sept. 2, Oct. 7 & Oct. 14

Experience fireworks in a new way with a Rhine River Lights cruise. Boats cruise down the most picturesque parts of the Rhine, offering jaw-dropping views of medieval castles, monasteries and more.

Cruises usually include a stopover in one of the many charming Rhine-riverside towns, in addition to wine tastings, live music and dancing. The evening is capped off with a grand finale of fireworks and since you’re on a boat – every spot is a “front-row seat.” There are four remaining dates (Aug. 26, Sept. 2, Oct. 7 and 14.) to hop aboard a Rhine River Lights tour – so reserve your spot today!

Neckar River and Heidelberg Castle fireworks, Sept. 2

The only thing that might be more stunning than seeing a castle, is seeing one illuminated by fireworks and red flames! Hailed as one of the best fireworks shows worldwide, the Castle Illumination and Neckar fireworks (Schlossbeleuchtungen) will wow the entire family. This castle fireworks are a long-time tradition, and celebrate the event’s 404th anniversary this year.

The last showing of 2017 is Sept. 2, when approximately 10 p.m. – the Heidelberg Castle is illuminated with red flames. After a few minutes, the flames subside and make way for a spectacular firework show over the Neckar River.

The best views are from the north banks of the Necker and Philosopher’s Walk. Local ships, the Old City and the castle itself are also great vantage points. Read further about this event at www.heidelberg-event.com.

Whether you grab a spot on a boat, on the river banks, or at the footsteps of the castle – say goodbye to summer in style as you welcome in the new fall season.
