EUROPE

When I was little, I loved celebrating two New Years – the more well-known version on Jan. 1 and the lesser-known Chinese New Year sometime between mid-January and early February. My mom would ensure I had on my lucky red pajamas and we’d trek over to my grandparents’ house for a feast and fireworks in the backyard. As an adult, I love watching the parades, eating all the food and enjoying the atmosphere. Lucky for us, we’re stationed just a train ride from London, which hosts one of the largest parties outside of Asia.

Year of the Rat

This year ushers in the Year of the Rat. Occupying the first position on the Chinese Zodiac, if you were born in 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996 and 2008, your sign is the rat. Rats are known to be quite the charmers. They’re witty, intelligent, curious, and easily adapt to changing situations. They are quick to read crowds and surroundings and are practical and ambitious. Rats are most compatible with Dragons, Monkeys and the Ox; least compatible with Horses, Roosters and Rabbits.

Celebrate in London

Draped in hues of crimson and gold, London’s Chinatown and surrounding neighborhoods provide the perfect backdrop for Chinese New Year celebrations. While New Year falls on Saturday, Jan. 25, the party begins Sunday, Jan. 26. Complete with a jaw-dropping parade, lion and dragon dances, musical performances and, of course, amazing food, you won’t want to miss it. Beginning near Charing Cross and winding through Trafalgar Square, Chinatown and the West End, the day will be jam-packed with events and activities. Family-friendly areas will be set up, including arts and craft booths, as well as dumpling-making workshops.
