Since 1989, the International Africa Festival has been the largest and oldest festival for African culture in Europe. With over 6,750 musicians from 56 countries, this event is sure to be a cultural treat. 2018 marks 30 years of the Africa festival, and this year it is open from May 31- June 3 in the Würzburg city center. Sidiki Diabaté, also known as Price of Kora, kicks off the festival on Thursday at 1 p.m. This rising star of the African urban music scene sings “Booba,” “Niska” and “Fatbaby.”
In addition to the many concerts, there is a street parade, photo exhibition, children’s program and a fashion show. The children’s program will be held in a circus tent this year led by author and musician Ibrahima Ndiaye. For entertainment he will be telling stories, playing percussion, dancing and singing. Children can also enjoy the African ensemble Adesa from Ghana, which will feature an African clown, acrobatics show and street parade. Open from noon to 8 p.m. daily, the children’s area is free of charge for festival visitors.
For the wine lovers, there will be a wine tent with wine from two different growing areas, Franconia and South Africa. Thandi and Cape Dreams are the featured South Africa wineries. The German winery featured is Am Stein. Participants can sample some or all of these varieties.
Tickets can be purchased online for day and evening concerts for 34 euros. General admission tickets are 8 euros. Children 12 and under are free. Tickets can also be purchased at the box office at the main entrance, starting at 11 a.m. daily
