Now through March 5, the heart of Munich comes alive with the Barrel-makers dance (Schäfflertanz).
The tradition of the barrel-makers dance is an old one, and dates back to the year 1517. A number of horrible plagues and diseases were ravishing Europe, and overall – for the common man, it was a fairly dismal time to live. Half of Munich’s population had died off, and morale was understandably low.
The barrel-makers of the city decided to change that – and created the dance that continues to this day.
