Founded in 16 BC by the Roman Empire during Augustus Caesar's rule, Trier is arguably Germany's oldest city and one of significant architectural and historical importance. The market and its 120 delightfully animated roof displays are set on the main square just beyond the 2,000-year-old Porta Nigra, with the Cathedral of St. Peter, Germany's oldest cathedral, looming as its backdrop.

Helpful hints: You'll be hard-pressed to eat only one freshly fried cinnamon churro, and the Grand Marnier-laced hot chocolate is the perfect complement.
Beyond the market: Retrace Roman history while in Trier at various local sites. The Porta Nigra, built around AD 180, is one of the best-preserved Roman gates in the world. Although most of St. Peter's Cathedral is medieval, the "Dom" sits on the remains of Trier’s early Roman structures. And the well-preserved area amphitheater dates back to the second century and is one of the few Roman amphitheaters utilized for open-air events. The Rhineland Museum holds one of the best collections of Roman artifacts in Germany.
