Love and romance consumes us in February and thinking of creative places to impress your significant other can be daunting. However, Germany has romantic settings that we can’t find as easily back in the States – castles! Sitting high atop Mount Hohenzollern stands the majestic Hohenzollern Castle. Many have called it one of Germany’s most beautiful castles and is truly what fairytale dreams are made of. However, it could also be considered the perfect atmosphere for a horror flick, which can be fitting for all the anti-Valentine’s Day people out there.
The past of Hohenzollern Castle
When you tour through Hohenzollern Castle, you learn all about its rich history. The intriguing tale of the “White Lady” is a fascinating combination of romance and horror. In the 1300s, the widowed Countess Kunigunde fell in love with the Prince of Nuremburg. Not long before they planned to tie the knot, the prince’s parents put an end to their romance, expressing that they would not allow them to wed while the “four eyes were watching.” Countess Kunigunde perceived that to mean her the eyes of her two children from her first marriage. So, she decided to murder them. Consequently, the prince wanted nothing to do with her after she committed such an atrocious act. She left for a monastery in Rome in search of forgiveness. She returned later on and became the abbess of the Himmelkron monastery.
Getting to the castle
Traveling to the castle if simple! You have the option to drive or take the train. Taking the train is easy, simply enter “Zizenhausen Hohenzollern, Stockach” as your destination in your search on the Deutsche Bahn’s website. It will automatically display the train schedule with the exact bus from the train station that will get you to the castle grounds.
Be prepared to hike from the parking lot to the castle itself. The hike offers a bit of exercise and the opportunity to relish in the beautiful scenery. However, if you’re traveling with little ones or older family members, there is a shuttle bus service available for two euros or less per person with one-way or round-trip tickets.
Nothing says, “I love you,” like a romantic day trip to Hohenzollern Castle. Nothing says, “I hate love,” like visiting a castle with a tale like the, “White Lady,” originating from it. Whether you’re planning your most epic date or the ultimate Valentine’s Day protest, Hohenzollern Castle can be your ideal location.
