If you grew up in a land-locked state as I did, a day at the beach meant piling into the station wagon without air conditioning and driving at least six hours in the sweltering Texas heat. While the ocean felt like it was 400-miles away, because it was, we often turned to an equally awesome body of water: lakes.
While Germany is not land-locked, getting to a beach can be a long journey. But, do not despair if the water bug bites you one Saturday morning. Germany has dozens of lakes that will provide you with all the fun in the sun you need. Allow me to introduce you to Lake Bostalsee.
Designed with fun in mind
Bostalsee was created in the 1970s to bring more tourism to the St Wendel area. This is a lake specially designed for swimming, boating, fishing and water sports. If you’re a novice at lake life, this is a good ‘starter-lake’ as there is plenty to do and it’s not overwhelmingly big. Bostalsee is also one of the most family-friendly lakes in Germany.
FUN IN THE SUN
Swimming
There are two swimming-only beaches with everything you need for your day at the lake: barbecue spots, play areas, restrooms, changing rooms and showers. If you’re dying to wiggle your toes in the sand, beaches line the water for you to set up shop with a beach chair and umbrella to relax the day away. Kids will get a kick out of soaring down the wave water slide.
Come sail away
Lake-life isn’t complete without a structure on which to float. A “Yachtschule” offers sailing events for groups and families. The kids will get a kick out of sailing through the water all while learning the ropes from a licensed captain. Need something more intimate? They offer romantic sailing rides for couples. If you’re wanting to hit the water solo, motorboats and pedal boats are also available for rent.
Water sports
Bostalsee is a favorite among windsurfers. In Germany, a windsurfing license is required to hit the water but the lake has training courses and issues VDS-windsurfing licenses. Looking for something a little less intense? Try paddleboard lessons and gracefully glide along the water.
If you’re wanting to head underwater, Bostalsee Lake has a great diving area. Beneath the surface is a sunken boat perfect for those trying to master their underwater skills in a controlled environment.
Beyond the water
The area is so much more than just a lake. It’s home to hiking, cycling and nordic walking trails.
Those who are not the “outdoorsy type” can check out CenterParcs, a fantastic sports and recreation venue in the park. There you’ll find Aqua Mundo, a tropical swimming pool with water slides and both indoor and outdoor pools. This is perfect for the little ones with specially designated pools for children and babies.
We all know Germany’s weather rarely wants to cooperate with our plans. If stormy skies are overhead, there are indoor activities such as bowling, laser tag and minigolf. While the kiddos burn off all that energy, mom and dad can recharge in the wellness-spa.
While CenterParcs can be an easy day trip, there are overnight accommodations. Holiday lake homes are for rent and range from one-to-five bedrooms. You’ll want to book early because these homes go very fast, especially during peak season.
